Volunteer Recognition

PFG President Gil Fergus
PFG President Gil Fergus was selected as the Volunteer Leadership Award winner by The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago during its annual awards dinner in March 2008.

Volunteer Center honors Little City ‘servants’

Little City Volunteers were honored in March 2008 by The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago for their outstanding efforts during the last year. Both Gil Fergus, who serves on both our Board and as President of the PFG Board and our Brandeis University Ladies who help with our Used Book Sale received top honors in their categories.

Several big congratulations were extended to Little City Board Member Gil Fergus, who was honored in March with the Volunteer Leadership Award from The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago.

Gil was honored for his longtime dedication to Little City – for his efforts in leading the Parent, Family and Guardian Group, volunteering at special events and service on the Board.

Gil received the award from The Volunteer Center’s board member Sheila Schwartz at the 39th Annual Caring Hearts Award Dinner, which honors the top volunteers in the north, west and northwest suburbs of Chicago. More than 100 volunteers were introduced during the evening, with Gil being one of 13 selected as the “best of the best.”

Naturally, Gil was speechless, commenting, “It was an honor just to be nominated, but it is hard to believe I would win. There are so many great volunteers here tonight. This is truly an honor.”

Also honored at the dinner were the ladies from the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee-North Shore Chapter, who won the Community Group award for volunteerism.

The Brandeis ladies turned over their annual Used Book Sale to Little City last year. They haven’t left, however, and the ladies are still volunteering and helping Little City each week with sorting, pricing and packing books for this year’s upcoming sale in June.

Brandeis University National Women’s Committee-North Shore Chapter
The ladies from Brandeis University National Women’s Committee-North Shore Chapter, who volunteer with Little City to continue their work with the Used Book Sale, were selected as the 2008 Community Group award winner for volunteerism by The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago.

The Brandeis ladies, most of whom live on the North Shore, were cited for their 47 years of conducting the sale and their continuing dedication to volunteerism by helping Little City. Accepting the award for the group were Nancy Levy, Claire Smith, Babette Henschel, Judy Weintraub, Joan Starkson and Lois Ringel.

“Gil and the ladies from Brandeis are true servants,” said Shawn Jeffers, Executive Director of Little City. “They give their all to projects and Little City, and they are a great example of the importance of volunteerism to Little City. We could not function without volunteers like them.”

At a separate awards luncheon held in April, Little City honored its top volunteer, selected from the hundreds of volunteers who help at Little City each year.

The honor went to Don Shipbaugh of Schaumburg, who received the 2008 George Menkin Award, which is named after a longtime Little City volunteer. Don volunteers each year at several events, and his warm smile is a great testimony to his kind heart for the residents of Little City and the people who attend our special events.

Congratulations to all our great volunteers!
