Adult Residential Services

Port Family Center
The Port Family Center on the Palatine Campus enables residents to live in apartment-style accommodations.

A home should be more than just a place to cook and sleep. A home should be a place that offers a sense of ownership, security, self-sufficiency and permanency. A home should belong to those who live there.

Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities want homes of their own, where they can choose what they want to do, when and with whom. The philosophy of our adult living programs goes beyond simply providing good homes. Little City provides homes where people can feel comfortable and secure in their environment – and more importantly – play an active role in the decisions that are central to their lives.

At Little City Foundation, we provide a variety of living options – both at Little City and in neighboring communities – that give adults the opportunity to make choices, develop independence and live life to its full potential.

Programs

The Adult Program at Little City Foundation offers many services and programs. From residential services to vocational opportunities to recreational activities, Little City adults are provided with a full range of programs to help them develop in all facets of their life.

Residential services

Little City Foundation offers a variety of living arrangements for its residents, providing choice on where and how they live.

Our Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) provides people with disabilities with the opportunity to live in residential communities supported by Little City staff 24 hours per day. The residents learn to live as independently as possible in a home environment. Staff assists the residents in cooking, cleaning activities of daily living, and in participating in community activities. Clinical (mental health and behavioral intervention), recreational (community, campus, and home-based) and medical services are provided to improve quality of life. Presently, Little City owns and operates 15 homes in the northwest suburbs.

Another Little City residential program is our CILA 1 service, which serves a number of individuals with developmental disabilities who live in their own apartments (non-LCF owned) and need minimal support.

The Port Family Center on our Palatine campus provides apartment living for more than 60 adults who are supported by staff for up to 24 hours per day to help them live as independently as possible and participate in community activities. Apartments at the Port Center may be one of two types:

  • Our Community Living Facility (CLF) offers apartments in which the resident has a private bedroom and bathroom with a community kitchen and living area. Residents who live in the CLF receive 24-hour per day staff support, while those in the SLA receive minimal support, dependent on their level of functioning. The CLF is a transitional setting where people build skills that increase their capabilities in areas of personal grooming and hygiene, cooking, budgeting, community integration and vocational development. All of these activities prepare people for more independent living. Adults in the CLF receive 24-hour supervision.
  • The Supported Living Arrangement (SLA) facility supports people with mild to moderate challenges, Supported Living Arrangements offer apartments at Little City where adults live by themselves or with a roommate. Individuals in this program are mostly independent and require less help and supervision. We help people with budget skills, grocery shopping or exploring work options. The ultimate goal for people who live in the SLA is to learn the skills that will enable them to live as independently as possible.
