Little City Heroes

I fight cerebral palsy,
and I walked for the first time today.
Because of Little City, I am my own hero.

Little City Hero: Krista

Krista is one of the hundreds of individuals with disabilities who have benefited from the recreational services that are offered throughout Little City’s therapeutic campus. Although Krista battles cerebral palsy, she was able to accomplish an amazing task: walking for the first time on her own in a pool.

Earlier this year, Krista decided she wanted to take advantage of the new pool lift that was installed to allow individuals in wheel chairs to lower themselves into the pool with minimal help from staff. This also makes them feel safe and in control as they enter the water. Krista had never previously been in a pool and was very excited to try out the lift and go in for the first time. She came to the pool ready to go and after a few adjustments to the water, she got in.

“Krista is a remarkable young woman. She perseveres through her disability and is driven to accomplish bigger and better things. Learning to walk for the first time proves her determination; Krista is a hero and a great role model for all individuals,” said Executive Director Shawn E. Jeffers.

Once Krista entered pool she was laughing and had a huge smile on her face. She was going around on her own trying to figure out how to turn, kick and push herself along. On the way back home, Krista mentioned how excited she was to walk on her own and asked to go swimming every week.

“Seeing Krista take steps in the water without her walker for the first time was a great experience. A huge smile on her face brought a smile to all of us who were there. Krista not only made progress towards her physical well-being but also increased her interests and confidence in trying new activities,” said Rachel Kilker, Children’s Recreation Therapist.

Krista is an extremely personable, outgoing and adventurous young woman who enjoys interacting with staff and peers in her home. She likes going to school and on different outings within the community. Krista also loves being outside, dancing, listening to music and now enjoys swimming.

Little City has developed adaptive recreational programming and sensory stimulating activities that are among the best in Illinois. These classes and programs target physical health and mental well-being. In addition to installing a pool lift, all recreational staff is certified to ensure more time is available for all individuals to engage in aquatic therapy. Little City also launched a program that teaches children how to swim utilizing the Special Olympics swimming guide.
