Dear Friends,Recently I celebrated my first year anniversary and this seminel moment gave me cause for reflection. No one could have prepared me for the depth and breadth of feelings that is part of the Little City experience. From meeting parents and family members who are first, second, and third generation supporters, to walking around our beautiful and spacious campus, or having the very special people we serve drop by my office for a chat, I soon came to realize that what I thought I knew about Little City Foundation’s proud and historic legacy was only a small part of what Little City truly is. Over the past 45 years Little City has provided continuous commitment and service to thousands of people with developmental disabilities and their families. As one would suspect many dynamic and moving changes have taken place during that time. When a small group of parents with a powerful and passionate vision to create a community where their children with developmental challenges would be accepted, encouraged, loved, and nurtured, I doubt that they could have predicted the Little City we know today. Today, we are a family like no other, founded on the belief that it is our responsibility to commit ourselves endlessly to assisting people, regardless of disability or impairment, to lead a full and abundant life. We are, and have been, a voice for those who have been ignored, the champion of those who need support, the mentor for those who have never been told “You can do it!” or “I believe in you!” We are an organization committed to its proud traditions, strong values, unbridled principles and the state of the art programs that have emerged from them. We are a community where an altruistic and caring staff, working within state and federal mandates and in collaboration with countless individuals, corporations, and foundations, seeks to empower each person to achieve their hopes, dreams and wishes. We are an agency that has remained focused and tireless in pursuit of achieving our founding families’ hope of becoming “a place called home”, regardless of anything that might have stood in our way. Today, Little City stands on the threshold of its greatest opportunities ever. New programs and projects offer greater opportunities for the many people enveloped by our service mission. A new, bold, and more dynamic vision opens new paths to our success in making this period of dynamic change one of the most significant moments in our history. It is an exciting time to be a part of the Little City family. Shawn E. Jeffers |
